We are greatly saddened by the passing of Ron Hynes on Thursday November 19th. His legacy is as one of the finest songwriters our country has known, and we’ve been proud to have him as a part of our family for many years now.
Ron was treated for throat cancer in 2012 and declared cancer-free, but in late October Ron announced that his cancer had returned to his hip and one lung. Ron publicly stated that he would continue writing because that’s what he needed to do: “I keep telling people my best work is yet to come. People say ‘what’s your best song?’ […] it’s the one I’m about to write.” In a powerful interview with NTV, his drive to continue was palpable, and we all admired his outlook – as the best possible way to approach life.
On November 17th he was admitted to the hospital and last evening, November 19th, he passed away.
We are heartened to see he is being remembered online by fans and friends, by the media who are recognizing the life of one of Newfoundland’s best-known, and in venues large and small across the country where his songs are sung.
